As a child, and then an adult, I watched my mother work, first as a designer, and later as a Plexiglass sculptor and artist. She and I shared a love of color and texture. Today, my 98-year-old aunt, also a professional artist, continues to paint daily. I believe I owe my passion for design and fabrication to these two women.
The jewelry, purses, and scarves I create start with an idea that leads to my trove of beads, gems, fabrics and yarns from all over the world. I am inspired by materials ranging from Swarovski crystals, to egg crates... pearls… inner tubes...seed beads... sea glass... polymer clay...zippers... straws... resins: anything that generates the spark of an idea. I see beauty everywhere and find the potential to create art out of anything. At the end of the day, I fall asleep dreaming of new ideas.
DukasDesigns allows me to follow my impulses in creating a variety of jewelry, accessories, and adornments. I specialize in custom work, melding my own vision with the ideas and wishes of the client in order to create a piece that captures the wearer’s unique personality or the meaning of a special occasion. This process begins with a visit to my home studio where the client and I exchange ideas amidst the raw materials with which I work. The consultation is a dialogue that continues until the piece is completed to our mutual satisfaction.
Although some pieces I fabricate are unique and cannot be duplicated, others may be available in a array of color or style variations. Creating jewelry, scarves and purses is my passion.
My work has been on display at the Belmont Gallery of Art and at the Massachusetts Conference for Women. I was also delighted to participate in the 2016 Lexington Open Studios. My work is currently available online and at:
